Outback Inspired Cabin

I'm particularly proud of this buildings eco credentials. The site originally housed a decrepit pole barn and I managed to use around 80% of the original materials in the new cabin, including the old telephone poles which now support the outback style porch and almost all the original cladding. It includes rustic features such as a small timber bathroom, wavy edged oak counter tops in the kitchen and a double sliding barn door. The rain is collected in repurposed whisky barrels and used to irrigate the garden. The decking is expansive and included flat top balustrades, perfect for placing drinks and enjoying the views.

Decking & Pergola

I loved every minute on this mammoth decking job. It required a huge amount of planning to get the placement of over 60 ground screws correct. Not an easy task as everything had to look symmetrical whilst following the natural slope of the garden and include a sunken fire pit, seating, steps and an L shaped covered pergola. It gave me the chance to be really creative with shapes, forming clean, straight lines and bold corners everywhere you look. The dark grey composite is ultra durable and is made from recycled plastic products. Hidden fixings ensure an uninterrupted wood grain pattern throughout.

Cedar Office & Gym

More than any other this building perfectly demonstrates the potential utility of a garden room. It contains spacious rectangular rooms with high ceilings and the insulation matches the current building regulations of new extensions. All the benefits of a new extension at a fraction of the price and looks fantastic too. The building is clad head to toe in cedar, stylish shadow gap cladding on the walls and an expanse of shingles on the roof, so it will naturally silver and blend into it's natural setting. To finish it off in style the customer chose aluminium windows, doors and even fascia that all really pop against the warm tones of the cedar

Larch Sewing Room

This build was slightly different from the usual brief as an old summerhouse was already built and required a full retrofit in order to maximise it's potential. After removing the rotten doors and shabby shingles I layered up the external faces and the roof with insulation, battens, membrane, counter battens and timber. The sides are clad in larch and the hipped roof in cedar shingles. The doors and windows are aluminium frames. All the aesthetic choices were to match the existing property and also mirrored in a nearby tool shed that I built. I worked closely with the customers to design the interior work space, including an extendable corner space for larger projects.

Corner Summerhouse

This summerhouse is the perfect example of why it's better to build something bespoke rather than "off the shelf". The size and shape were an exact replica of an existing summerhouse that had only lasted a few years but the specs were highly increased. These upgrades included: much thicker insulation, much larger windows (and more of them), double glazing, a bigger porch and extra durable composite cladding. What is truly amazing though is that the overall price was actually very slightly less than that of it's inferior, prefabricated counterpart. The customer kept costs even lower by doing the flooring themselves.

Oak Giant

In terms of weight and height I think it's unlikely that anything will ever beat this epic build! The frame is 6x6 oak whilst the walls and roof are clad in naturally pre-aged cedar. I particularly love the crisp contrast inside between the white painted cladding and the oak frame, as well as outside between the black aluminium windows and the timber. The striking gable windows to the front as well as the generously sized skylights mean that sunlight and shadows dance across the room throughout the day. The design is a great example of how I collaborate with customers who have a clear vision of the materials they want to use and overall tone they want to achieve.
